Set Yourself Apart from the Crowd

Good Morning my friends,

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9)

Jesus’ thoughts are not your thoughts; neither are your ways His ways. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are His ways and thoughts higher than yours. Remember who He is when you spend time with Him. Be amazed at the wonder of being able to commune with the King of the universe at any time, any place. Never take this amazing privilege for granted. Although He is vastly higher and greater than you, He is training you to think His thoughts. As you spend time in His Presence, His thoughts will gradually form in your mind.  

I’ve often told my boys to strive to set themselves apart from the rest of the world with their actions. I explained that it’s easy to be the norm and do what others are doing but it takes courage to go against the grain. I told them not to try to blend in with the crowd but to do something that makes you different. I told them to be the leader of the pack not a follower in the pack. I quite often wonder if my thoughts, my ways & my words have even been heard at all.. It’s not like they’re profound words or anything like that but I believe that’s the recipe for success for young people today. As I preparing to write down my thoughts last night I couldn’t help but think about Jesus . His ways were different.. His thoughts were like no other and He was definitely a leader. His Spirit is the Director of bringing Bible verses to your mind, or He will enable you to hear Him “speak” directly to you. These ways of communications strengthen you and prepare you for whatever is before you on your life-path. Take time to listen to His voice. Through your sacrifice of precious time, Jesus will bless you far greater than you dare to ask.  

Jesus gave us instructions on how to live our life daily. He tells us in Matthew 5:16, “let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”    

In Matthew 5:25, “Settle matters quickly with your adversary.” 

In Matthew 5:29-30, Jesus says, “If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out, if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off, it is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.”

He tells us in Matthew 5:39-42, “do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.”

In Matthew 5:44, He says “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” 

Look for Jesus to send you thoughts & messages that appear at times & in places that the ordinary wouldn’t recognize and then embrace them. During your quiet moments when Jesus lays a Bible verse, hymn, or song of praise on your heart.. As believers you shouldn’t let those moments go to waste or take those times for granted. Those are the times that we should bask in the Glory of God. We should go directly to His Throne in prayer and give Him THANKS for the honor & glory for speaking directly to us…

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” (Colossians 4:2)

Duties of a DAD 

Good Morning my friends, 

Last night as I was trying to go to sleep I couldn’t help but think about my boys and how much that I love them. I looked back and remembered when Keri was pregnant with them, how I would read to them at night. Keri would be laying on the bed and I would read whatever book I was reading at the time as if they were laying there with us. I read books like “The Book of Virtues” by Willam J Bennett, Oliver North’s “Under Fire”, Norman J Swarzkoff’s “It Doesn’t take a Hero” & Jimmy Johnson’s “Turning the Thing Around”.   There were so many more. I made sure to talk to them every day and tell him how much I loved them and what all we were going to do once they were born. I wanted them to know my voice once they were born. To say that I was proud the day they were both born is understatement. My love for my boys runs so deep with in my heart that it goes beyond what any word I could ever describe. It began way before Keri & I got married and has continued to grow stronger with each passing day. How could I love something that wasn’t living? Let me explain. The love for my boys began on June 15th 1988.. That was the day my nephew Chris was born and the first time that I held him. At that moment I knew that some day I would have boys. Although Chris was’n’t mine, he does have part of my blood running through his veins because of my sister. It didn’t know if Chris’ biological father wasn’t in the picture and if he was I knew it wasn’t going to be long. I assumed the role & the duties of dad because I wanted him to be able to experience what it meant to have a dad.. I fed him, changed his diapers, played with him. We did everything together we possibly could. I took him to the mall, we went to McDonald’s. I bought him his first bike and taught him how to ride it. I played catch with him. I attended almost EVERY baseball game that he ever played in from T-ball thru high school. I have always treated him as if he was my son and still do to this day.  

“The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” (Jeremiah 31:3)

One of the things that I’ve always tried to do is teach my boys that in life, we often get caught up in the extra-curriculars thins in like both the good & bad. We let the joys & thrill of the moment gather up our attention. When we allow things like that to happen, we lose focus of the fact that our eternal future is at stake. I tell them often that the choices that they make now here on earth will have way more of an impact & consequences in eternity than they will ever have while they’re here on earth.. Our eternal future is forever. Our Father loves us way more than we deserve and could ever imagine. God spells it out for us in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” My friends the Bible says WHOSOEVER.. That means EVERYONE… When I think about the love I have for my boys, it fails in comparison to the love our Father has for his children. I can’t imagine letting one of my boys die for me let alone someone else.  

God loves you with an everlasting Love, which flows from the depths of eternity. Before you were born, He knew you. Think about the awesome mystery of a Love that encompasses you from before birth to beyond the grave. His love was a lot different than my love for my boys. Modern man lost the perspective of eternity. He has allowed the joys & frills of society to distract himself from the gaping jaws of death, he has turned to the world to find the joy & peace that he’s missing. When you try to be still in His Presence it’s like a lost art, yet it’s the very stillness that enables you to experience His eternal Love. You need the certainty of His loving Presence in order to weather the storms of life. During the times of severe testing, even the best theology can fail. The ultimate protection against sinking during life’s storms is devoting time to develop your friendship with Jesus.

Because of the Lord ’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord .” (Lamentations 3:22-26)

Jesus’ Unfailing Love

Good Morning my friends,

It doesn’t seem possible that it was 3 years ago that Keri & I took our oldest son Zakk down to Texas A & M University for a campus tour. We’ve watched patiently on the sidelines as he’s grown into a young man that made us beyond proud. As we walked the campus of A & M, we couldn’t help but think that this time next year he would be completing his first semester as an Aggie. That in August he would be moving out of our house and into a dorm. As those thoughts crowded our mind and a huge lump gathered in our throats, thankfully the wind was blowing because our eyes were already watering but I couldn’t help but think about how much I was going to miss his endless bombardment of jokes, different voices, faces, & overall gentle nature. He has grown into a young man full of beliefs, ideas, opinions, great character, integrity and high morals & values. I must admit, there have been times that I’ve wondered if he even listened..  

“Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them sacrifice thankful offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy.” (Psalm 107:21-22)

I remember as we drove home after touring the campus, we talked at length about what this means. I explained to him that this is only the beginning of a new journey in his life and this journey would lead him into the remainder of his life. I told him the importance of every decision that he makes while in college could effect this journey which in turn could effect his future. I conveyed to him that if he makes the right decisions now and sacrifices the time now that he would never have a worries or headaches in life. I reminded him that most importantly that it was God that would bless him and that brought him to A & M and as long as he remained focused on Him, remained thankful to Him with ALL things & gave Him ALL the Honor, Praise & Glory while he’s there that God will continue to bless him abundantly. 

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)

While walking the sidewalks of A & M, with a lump in my throat & tears in my eyes, I thanked God for my many blessings including the lump & tears… I thanked Him for loving me way more than I could ever imagine and for bringing me comfort when my thoughts, biggest fears & anxiety would take control in the next year. I also thanked Him when it was time to drive away & let Zakk start his journey.   It hurt my heart but I knew deep inside it was something I had to do..
Rest in the deep assurance of Jesus’ unfailing Love.   Let your body, mind and spirit relax in His Presence. Release into His care anything that is troubling you, so that you can focus your full attention on Him. Be awed by the vast dimensions of His Love for you: wider, longer, higher, and deeper than anything you know. Rejoice that this marvelous Love is yours forever! The best response to this glorious gift is a life steeped in gratefulness. Every time you are grateful towards Him, you acknowledge that He is your Lord and Savior. This is the perfect way for a child of God. Receiving with gratefulness. Bring Jesus the sacrifice of gratitude, and watch to see how much He blesses you.  

“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:16-19)

Shackles of Sin

Good Morning my friends,

As I grow closer to God in my walk and then look at society, I become more and concerned with those that are lost. It’s so obvious that there are so many people that are walking around clueless. It wasn’t too long ago that I was one of those people but fortunately I heard a message from God and the Holy Spirit awakened my soul and removed the scales from my eyes and I saw for the first time what I had been missing for 43 years. I truly didn’t know what it meant to free my soul from the shackles of sin. I walked into church that morning headed for hell but come out ready to spend my eternity in Heaven. 

“Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized.” (Acts 9:18)

My whole adult life I thought I was already saved but yet I lived my life differently. I was the ultimate hypocrite. I never considered myself to be a hypocrite because I never condemned people for their sinful lives. I just joined them in their lifestyle. I made an appearance at church almost EVERY Sunday so the people there would think I was a stand up Christian and church guy, but the moment I walked out the door I lived as if I wanted to be hell bound. If you would’ve asked me where I was going to spend ETERNITY, I would’ve boldly declared in Heaven. Heck, I was a believer. I could even quote scripture. Truth be known…. Satan believes in God as well. He knows God exist. In fact, he can quote scripture as well but satan will not be in Heaven.

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” (Colossians 3:15)

I thank God daily because the closer I get to Him, the more He reveals Himself to me. As I grow in my walk, He removes more and more layers of scales from my eyes and blesses me with more insight of His love & graciousness. My days have become continual shouts of praise and thanksgiving for the many blessings which He pours on me. I thank Him for those that are walking around aimlessly because it’s an opportunity for me to pray for them and plant the seed, so the Holy Spirit can perhaps do the same thing for them as was done for me. Maybe my words will be the words that they hear that will shed the light that they are indeed hell bound. They need to know that the path they’re walking down is a dangerous path and they need to repent and change immediately.

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.” (Psalm 100:4-5)

Let gratefulness rule your heart. As you honor Jesus with a grateful attitude for the blessings in your life, a marvelous thing begins to happen. Scales fall from your eyes, enabling you to see more and more of His glorious riches. With your eyes opened more, you can help yourself to whatever you need from His house of treasure. Each time you recieve one of Jesus’ golden gifts, let your gratefulness sing out and praise His Holy Name. “Hallelujahs” are the language of heaven, and they can become the language of your heart. A life of praise and gratefulness becomes a life filled with miracles. Instead of trying to be in control, focus on Him and what He is doing. This is the power of praise: centering your entire being in Him. He created you to live this way. He made you from His own image. So enjoy the abundant life by sending an overflowing amount of praise and gratefulness to Him.

“Again they shouted: “Hallelujah! The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever.” The twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne. And they cried: “Amen, Hallelujah!” Then a voice came from the throne, saying: “Praise our God, all you his servants, you who fear him, both great and small!” Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: “Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns.” (Revelation 19:3-6)

Mr Fix it

Good Morning my friends,

Most of you are aware that Keri worked for me for 7 years prior to my resignation . A lot of evenings she use come to me and want to talk about her day, her frustrations and things that happened. You’re probably wondering why she would do this considering we’re in the same building. Truth be known, although I see her several times a day it’s only briefly when I come out of my office. Most of the time I stay busy in my office.. I did this because I’ve learned that employees don’t like to be micro-managed or watched over every move they make. I personally feel that’s one of the most common mistakes a manager can ever make with employees. In fact, I have found that the majority of employees thrive when they are trusted with responsibility and made to feel that they have a voice in the direction of a business.  

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42)

Employees want to take ownership. Employees that take ownership played a huge factor in the success of my store. When I first became store manager, I tried to do everything myself. I lived by the motto,” If I want something done right, then I will do it myself.” I quickly became wore out from doing this but I also the added stress in my life. I was constantly in fix-it mode.. Often when Keri would start to tell me about her day I would immediately start planning how I was going to fix her frustrations. This despite her not wanting me to fix anything. She was just needing to be heard.. Being Mr. Fix-it is one of man’s biggest problems but yet it is one of the easiest to fix. How Ironic is that? Here we are trying to fix everyone else’s problems but we refuse to fix one of our easiest. That seems to be a common theme in this country? We try to police the world but yet we run amuck right here.. We try to feed the world, yet we having people starving right here. We try to house the world yet we have homeless people right here. We try to fund the world, yet we have people living in poverty right here. These are problems we should’ve already fixed. God will bless ALL the people that are in need when the time is right in His eyes, not ours. Perhaps people struggle in this country because they have yet to turn to God to be their answer for their problems. Perhaps they failed to give Him praise. Problems are a few part of life, they’re inescapable, they are woven into the very fabric of this fallen world.

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” (Psalm 32:8)

You tend to go into problem-solving mode all too readily, acting as if you have the capacity to fix everything. This is a habitual response, so automatic that it bypasses you conscious thinking. Not only does this habit frustrate you, it also distances you from Jesus. Do not let fixing things be your top priority. You are ever so limited in your capacity to correct all that is wrong in the world around you. Don’t weight yourself down with responsibilities that are not your own. Instead, make your relationship with Jesus your primary concern. Talk with Him about the things that are on your mind, seeking His perspective on the situation. Rather than trying to fix everything that comes to your attention, ask Him to show you what is truly important. Remember that you are en route to heaven, so let your problems fade in the Light of eternity. 

“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.”  (Philippians 3:20-21)

Some Sheep are Stubborn 

Good Morning my friends

 I use to ask, “WHY ME” when things didn’t or weren’t going my way.. I thought seriously, I might not be the perfect husband, father, son, brother, employee or friend but why is this happening to me?….. I don’t deserve this!! …..I’m a lot better person than….and they never seem to being going thru crap like this… They’re on top of the world… Can you relate?  

These thoughts have surfaced throughout my life. I can honestly say that when I look back on those situations now, I can see that during those difficult & trying times I was moving further & further away from God. For those of you that have kids think back when your kids were small and you would take them outside to play or perhaps to a public park. You constantly were on alert watching and making sure your child didn’t get too far away or out of your sight. If you were like Keri & I, you were ALWAYS saying, “come back over here”. When I stop & think about it, as an adult I’ve always been a lot like a kid.. God was always saying, “come back over here.” He knew that I was going to be the type that would have the tendency to push the envelope and have to be reeled back-in constantly. I think God has always made sure that He has kept me on one of those child leashes… I can hear Him now, “this one is stubborn, Jesus reel Him in the Holy Spirit is tired.”  
My mother has often said that I would be within the grasp of her hand one second and vanished the next. I’ve heard tell this story my times even to my boys. We were at particular store shopping. I think it was me, my mom, my sister & grandmother. They were looking at clothes at Mitchell’s…I think… My mom had a hold of my hand like always and I managed the squirm out of her grasp and she told me to stay next to her. Of course being the little angel I was I said, ok.. She turned around for a split second to check on my sister and I vanished. The search was on.. She combed the entire store searching for me.. After searching everywhere she finally called out my name and I answered but she still could not see me. You see I was right by her side in the original spot the whole time but she just didn’t know because she couldn’t see me. I had found a place to sit down in the middle of the round clothes rack or perhaps I was hiding… I think I just found a place to sit but I’m pretty sure if my grandmother was still alive, her, my mom, & my sister would say different…lol

 “He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.”   (Isaiah 40:11)

Let Jesus place His Peace into your innermost being. When you sit quietly in the Light of Jesus’ Presence, you can sense Peace growing within you. This is not something accomplished through self-discipline and will power; it’s opening yourself to recieve His blessing. In this age of independence, people find it hard to acknowledge their neediness. However, He will take you along the path that is highlighted with need for Him. He will place you in situations where your strengths were irrelevant and your weaknesses were glaring evident. Through those times, Jesus has drawn you closer and closer to Him. You will discover flowers of Peace blooming in the most desolate places. You will learn to thank Him for hard times and difficult journeys, trusting that through them all that Jesus will accomplish His best work. You will realize that needing Him is the key to knowing Him intimately, which is the gift above all gifts.   

“The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.” (Isaiah 58:11)

MY CHALLENGE PRAYER for YOU… Look deep and see if God has you on a leash.
