December the Month of Joy & Peace

Good Morning my friends,

The month of THANKFULNESS is coming to an end. Thankfulness is a Fruit of the Spirit which we give when we live in the Spirit. Thankfulness takes the sting out of adversity. That ‘s why Jesus instructs us to give thanks for everything. There is an element of mystery in this transaction: You give Him thanks (regardless of your feelings), and He will give you Joy (regardless of your circumstances).  

“Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Ephesians 5:20)

This is a spiritual act of obedience at times, blind obedience. To people who don’t know Jesus intimately, it can seem irrational and even impossible to thank Him for heartrending hardships. Nonetheless, those who obey Him in this way are invariably blessed, even though difficulties may remain. Thankfulness will open your heart to His Presence and your mind to His thoughts. You may still be in the same place, with the same set of circumstances, but it’s as if a light has been switched on, enabling you to see from His perspective. This is the Light of His Presence that removes the sting from adversity.

Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.”(John 4:17)

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is just 25 days away.. JOY is another Fruit of the Spirit. We’re rewarded Joy by God when we’re thankful. I think for the month of December everyone should focus on the birth of Christ and post something about JOY since we were so thankful in November. May be it could be Joy or PEACE.

When we’re given the peace of mind in circumstance that doesn’t make sense, we should absorb it because we’re told “do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:1). It’s hard to make sense to be thankful in ALL circumstances we must remember things don’t have to make sense because “His ways are not our ways.” This is the same God that gave His Son on Calvary for you and me despite already knowing that we’re going to fail & disappoint Him.  

“The peace of God transcends all understanding.” (Phillipians 4:7) 

The apostle Paul says in Ephesians 3:19, “to know this love that surpasses knowledge–that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”

Stop and Smell the Roses

Good Morning my friends,

 Keri & I use to cherish the times when our boys would chose to come in the living room and watch tv with us or just come to spend a little time with us.. It was our chance to stop & smell the roses. We live such busy lives that we constantly fail to stop & smell the roses.. As parents I think we can all agree that it just seems like yesterday when our kids were just babies. They grew-up right before our busy eyes.. As I think back when my boys were small, I can remember the countless opportunities that I had a chance to stop & smell the roses and didn’t because I was “too busy” watching football or doing something else trivial.. Yesterday, I came to the realization that my oldest son Zakk is no longer a resident in my home. We were talking about Christmas and when the semester ended? The semester ends on December 10th but he won’t be home until the 19th because he preordered a ticket to the new Star Wars movie. He told my sister that he lives in College Station. My friends how often do you fail to stop & smell the roses? Our roses are not just our children but also our spouse, parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, friends, co-workers…etc…etc…   

“Fill my heart with joy when their grain and new wine abound. In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord , make me dwell in safety.” (Psalm 4:7-8)

How many times do we fail to take in the majesty of a sunrise or the splendor of a sunset? How about the gracefulness of the moon & stars in the darkness of night? Have you ever sit along the banks of a river and watch God paint His beautiful canvas? Can you remember as a kid lying in the grass during the summer looking up at the clouds and the blue sky and watching God paint pictures in the clouds.. My friends take the time to stop & smell the roses and watch God paint you a picture.. Those are the roses that make up your bouquet.

As you sit quietly in Jesus’ Presence, let Him fill your heart and mind with peace and love.. This is the most direct way to achieve a this stance. If your mind needs a focal point, gaze at His Love that was poured out for you on the cross. Remember that nothing in Heaven or on Earth can separate you from that Love. This remembrance builds a foundation of gratitude in you, a foundation that circumstances cannot shake.

As you go through your day, look for tiny treasures that are placed along the way. Jesus lovingly goes before you and plant little pleasures to brighten your day… Look carefully for them, and pluck them one by one. When you reach the end of the day, you will have a lovely bouquet… Offer it up to Him with a grateful heart. Receive My Peace as you lie down to sleep, with thankful thoughts playing a lullaby in your mind.

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)

Happy Thanksgiving

Good Morning my friends
Today is THANKSGIVING…. A day that we gather with our families & friends and give THANKS for the many blessings that God has so graciously blessed us. Today be thankful for not only the good but the bad as well… Henry Ward Beecher said it best, “The unthankful heart… discovers no mercies; but let the thankful heart sweep through the day and, as the magnet finds the iron, so it will find, in every hour, some heavenly blessings! ”

My friends today I give thanks to you. I appreciate your friendship and standing behind me in my battle with cancer. I love each & every one of YOU. I pray that you all are blessed today more than enough…

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in time of need.” (Psalm 46:1)

A thankful attitude opens windows to heaven. Spiritual blessings fall freely onto you through those openings from eternity. As you look up with a grateful heart, you get glimpses of Glory through those windows. You cannot yet live in heaven, but you can experience foretastes of your ultimate home. Such samples of heavenly fare revive your hope. Thankfulness opens you up to these experiences, which then provide further reasons to be grateful. Thus, your path becomes an upward spiral with ever increasing in gladness. Thankfulness is not some sort of magic formula; it is the language of Love, which enables you to communicate intimately with Jesus. A thankful mind-set does not entail a denial of reality with its plethora of problems. Instead, it rejoices Him. He is your refuge and strength, an ever-present and well-proved help in trouble.  

“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.” (Habakkuk 3:17-18)

Be Thankful

Good Morning my friends

Every November on Facebook brings the 30 days of THANK’S. Each day for the whole month people write something in which they’re thankful. It’s fun reading the different things people are thankful for.. I think we ALL can admit that there are somethings that we all have in common that we are thankful for however its the other things that sets us apart from one another. Have you ever thought about being thankful for a problem in your life? You know those thorns in your flesh… It’s easy to be thankful for the good things but what about those things that bring turmoil or sadness in our life? Not so much huh… The Bible tells in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “give thanks in ALL circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Wow in all circumstances…. Perhaps we need to start looking at the “bad things” a little different. I’m learning that things happen for a reason. Most of the time it’s to draw our focus away from our busy life & bring our focus back on Him. God has a way of knocking us upside our head and saying, HELLO remember Me. In the Summer 2011 when Keri & I went through our troubles, we believe it was to put us in a place where we could handle what was about to come into our life. Today we’re able to thank God for the thorns in our flesh.. Maybe not ALL thorns but we are working on it…

“Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.” (Hebrews 13:15)

Thank Jesus every chance you get throughout the day for His Presence and His Peace. These are gifts of supernatural proportions. Ever since the resurrection, He has comforted His followers with these messages like “Peace be with you” and ” I am with you always.” Listen as He offers you His Peace and His Presence in full measure. The best way to recieve these glorious gifts is to thank Him for them. It’s impossible to spend too much time thanking and praising Him. He created you first and foremost to glorify Him. Thanksgiving and praise puts you in proper relationship with Him, opening the way for His riches to flow into you. As you thank Him for His Presence and Peace, you appropriate His riches gifts.  

“While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” (Luke 24:36)

Seeking Admiration & Praise

Good Morning my friends

I think one of things that we all try to do is make our parents proud. When I was kid playing peewee football @ RYA, although I really loved playing football one of the reasons I loved playing was the praise I would receive from my mom & dad… To see their faces light up because of my play allowed me to puff my chest out. Most of the games I would also receive praises from other parents from our team, those that were just watching us play and also from the opposing coaches and parents. You can bet that puffed up my chest even further. Garnering praise from others is dangerous, especially when it becomes your focal point…

“Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” (Psalm 62:8)

I love sharing my testimony with you all but I’ve told Keri on many occasions, if the likes & the comments ever become my focal point then I’m going to stop. I share my trials & tribulations with the hope of leading people to the cross of salvation and nothing more. I grown to dislike telling when I’m headed to Houston, having a CT scan or receiving chemo, I say not because I’m ungrateful for all the prayers but because to me it focuses on me and the message I’m trying to convey is a lot bigger than little ole me. There have been days in my past when I first started this devotional/blogging journey when I said to myself man I deserve a pat on the back from God for that post. Then I reminded myself quickly that I don’t DESERVE anything because Jesus paid the price not me.. My reminder are the tattoo on my forearm. That’s the reason I got those tattoos.. A reminder that its about more than Dino… Jesus paid the price for me and He did it for you despite ourselves. He had prior knowledge that you and I would lose focus on Him & from time to time would glamour for praise. But His Love is greater than those sins. I don’t let my failures & disappointments discourage me.. He knows I’m going to fail Him. That’s the beauty of His Love but don’t take it for granted.  

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Jesus is pleased with His child. Allow yourself to become fully aware of His pleasures shining upon you. You don’t have to perform well in order to receive His Love. A relationship based on performance focus will pull you away from Him. It will take you towards some sort of Pharisaism. This can also be a subtle form of idolatry because you’re worshiping your own good works. It can also be a source of deep discouragement when your works don’t measure up to your expectations. Shift your focus from your performance to Jesus’ Radiant Presence. The Light of His Love shines on you continually, regardless of your feelings or behavior. Your responsibility is to be receptive to this unconditional Agape Love. Thankfulness and trust are your primary receptors. Thank Him for everything; trust in Him at all times. These simple disciplines will keep you open to His Loving Presence.  

“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:16-19)

Always in Control

Good Morning my friends

We just love to be in control… Back in 2009, Keri, the boys & I went to South Fork, Colorado on vacation with some friends. For those that have never been to South Fork let me tell you it’s majestic… Having two teenage boys, one of the things that we knew we were gonna do no matter what was go white water rafting.. One of the places that offered it was in Durango. We made the 2 hr drive to Durango. We decided since we were inexperienced rafters that we would take the tour that was mostly class 2 with some 3 & 4’s.. After being fitted with life jackets and being issued paddles we waited what seemed like forever to load up and go. We finally all loaded up on the bus to go to our entry point. They gathered us all around & explained to the many different groups the rules & guidelines on the river. Then they assigned each group to a tour guide.. Our tour guide wasTom. Tom gave us a special signal (we were to pat the top of our head) if we needed help in the unlikelihood of the raft turning over or if fell out from the rough rapids.. We chose our places in the raft and he told us he would be telling us when to paddle and if we just needed one side to paddle to help with direction he would tell us which side. We entered the river and started paddling. We gained speed and he told us to stop paddling.. For the next 3 hrs we floated down what was the equivalent to the “Lazy River” @ Six Flags.. Don’t get me wrong there were a couple of places that were flowing “ok” but nothing that would get your blood flowing with excitement. The boys were continually asking if they could paddle so we could go faster. Tom would eventually tell them when we could paddle and when we when we got to going fast Tom would then guide us into a rock so we would get stuck. In all honesty, I’m not certain why we even had to wear a life jacket. The water was never over knee deep.. Seriously….had the raft turned over all we would’ve had to do to save ourselves was to sit up. We didn’t even need a guide.. Tom did narrate the trip but we didn’t want a historical tour we wanted excitement.. I’ve learned that my walk with Jesus is a lot like my trip white water rafting. I tend to want to be in control of my own raft. I want to paddle when I’m suppose to be floating and vice versa. I didn’t know where the pick up point was. I didn’t know the river and what lies ahead.. I have to remember that I have the ultimate tour guide if I will let Him guide me, He will get me to my ultimate destination. 

“In your unfailing love you will lead the people you have redeemed. In your strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling.” (Exodus 15:13)

Leave the outcomes up to Jesus!! Follow Him wherever He leads you without worrying about how it will all turn out. Think of your life as an adventure, with Jesus as your Guide and Companion. Live in the now, concentrating on staying in step with Him. When your paths lead to a cliff, be willing to climb it with His help. When we come to a resting place, take time to refresh in His Presence. Enjoy the rhythm of life when you live close to Him. You already know your ultimate destination of your journey. You’re working towards your entrance into heaven. So keep your focus on the path before you, leaving outcomes up to Him.  

“I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord ; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” (Psalm 27:13-14)

The Life of the Party

Good Morning my friends,

I woke up last night and couldn’t go back to sleep so I jumped on Facebook and was browsing. I was looking at “On this a Day” and saw that three years ago I attended a multi-year, multi-high school/junior high reunion at Boston’s. I remember it was the first time that I attended such an event that I didn’t feel that I had to be “THE LIFE” of the party. The greatest thing about the whole night was waking up the next morning. I woke up quite different than I did in the past. I woke up refreshed without a headache and wasn’t sick from drinking too much. I woke up remembering everything I did & said and didn’t have that I didn’t offend or embarrass Keri. I woke up this morning knowing that I honored my wife & our marriage. I woke up remembering all the people that I saw. It was a relaxing & peaceful night.. I don’t look down upon anyone that drinks because it’s their choice, all I can do is pray for them. We are all different people and in different places in our journey in life. 

“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Ephesians 5:18-20)

Come to Jesus and rest in His Peace. His face is shining upon you in rays of peace. Instead of trying to figure things out yourself, relax in the Presence of the One who knows everything. As you lean on Him trusting dependence you feel peaceful and complete. He designed you to live in close communion with Him. When you around other people, you tend to cater to their expectation. You will start to feel enslaved to pleasing them, and your awareness of Jesus’ Presence grows dim. Your efforts to win their approval eventually exhaust you. You offer these people dry crumbs rather than the living water of His Spirit flowing through you. This is not His way for you! Stay in touch with Him, even during your busiest moments. Let His Spirit give you words of grace as you live in the Light of His Peace.  

Jesus said, “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” (John 7:38)
