Your Heart Determines Your Character

Good Morning my friends,

God wants to take care of you. He wants you to feel the warmth and security of being enveloped in His loving Presence. Every detail of your life is under His control. Everything you do fits into a pattern for good. Those who love & follow God are called according to His design and purpose.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

The world is in an abnormal place. In its fallen condition, people tend to believe that chance governs the universe. Events may seem to occur randomly, with little or no meaning. When you view the world this way you overlook one basic fact which is the limitations of human understanding. What you know of the world that is only the tip of the iceberg.

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”(1 Peter 5:7)

Under the visible surface of the world are mysteries too vast for you to comprehend. If you could only see how close God is to you and how He’s constantly working on your behalf, you would never again doubt that He is caring for you. This is why you must live by faith, not by sight; trusting in God’s mysterious, majestic Presence.

“For we live by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7)

Life is not always easy, nor fair… It often requires you to get uncomfortable. Society has programmed us to measure ourselves according to its standards… High School students are measured by their class ranking. College students by their GPA.. Professionally by the title under your name. Personally by the size of your house, the car you drive, or the money in your bank account. One of the things Keri & I have tried to instill in our boys is to not let society measure their success. Success is not about winning or losing. It’s not determined by your GPA or your class ranking. Success is about never giving up. It’s about getting up after every time you get knocked down. It’s about your heart.. Your heart determines your character. The people that do the things they don’t want to do the most, are the people that win in life.

“For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required.” (Luke 12:48)

Satan will never fight you for where you are, he will fight you for where you’re going. God is ultimately in control of our lives when it comes to life, blessings & death. He gives us free will to make our own decisions. I believe God is constantly rewriting the ending to our lives based on our decisions. The day & time that we breath our final breath has already been written in stone but how we end will be determined by our decisions.

“Then Job replied to the Lord : “I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted. You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’ Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know.” (Job 42:1-3)

My CHALLENGE prayer for you. Make the right decisions and allow God to write your life as if it were a fairytale.

A Mistake……..NOT

Good Morning my friends,

A persistent problem that plaques you or that goes on and on should be viewed as a rich opportunity for knowledge. A problem which is ongoing is like having a tutor whom is always by your side. The possibilities of learning from problems are limited only by your willingness to be teachable. Thank God for your problems. Ask Him to open your eyes and your heart to all that He is trying to accomplish through your difficulty. Once you have become grateful for a problem, it loses its power to drag you down. On the contrary, your thankful attitude will lift you up into a heavenly place with God. With this perspective, your difficulty can be seen as a slight, temporary distress that is producing for you a transcendent Glory never to cease!

I’m sure that most of you have made decisions in your past that you regret. Perhaps you’ve made some decisions that have gained a life of there own and continue to live with you daily. I know that I’ve made decisions that have continued to rear its ugly head. In the past there are times that I handled it well and there are times that I failed miserably.. We often make decisions without worrying about the consequences or the impact it will have on the people in our lives. My most loyal and biggest fan for the past 23 years has been my wife Keri. She has loved me, stood beside me, cheered for me and cared for me. I have made some really dumb decisions in our marriage that have damaged it tremendously. I never took into consideration the impact of the decisions I made, the lies that I told or the harsh words that I let fly out of my mouth. They all did their damage and broke her heart. I never thought about the fact that I was violating her trust. Because I was doing what I thought was going to make me happy. After it was all said and done, I called it a “mistake.” It’s funny how we try to lessen the impact of our sin by dumbing it down. A mistake is something you make while balancing your checkbook. A mistake is an accident. When you choose to do something wrong it’s not a mistake. IT’S A SIN!!! It’s wrong!!

“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” (2 Corinthians 4:17)

Of course once a “mistake” is out in the open we expect to move forward and to pick up where things were before they went south.. I was no different.. My thoughts were that I’m here 100% now so it’s time to get back to normal.. I learned very SLOWLY that trust is hard to regain once it’s lost. I learned that there are words that I could say, things that I could do & actions that I made that triggered her fears and it would bring ALL those feelings to the surface again. I knew instantly when it happens because she gets the deer in the headlights look or her eyes will well up with tears. There are times it could be her body language that is recognized. Those are the times that my reaction means the most.. Those are the times of reassurance. A BIG hug & kiss or an I love you will calm her fears. There were times that I allowed my frustrations to get the best of me and I reacted accordingly. I tried to blame her for not be able to move forward. Those were the times that I needed to learn to be more patient, more loving, more caring & a lot more understanding. It was my decisions that made the negative impact on our marriage not hers.
I learned to thank God for allowing her feelings to resurface time after time. It has made me a more loving and caring husband. Mitt has made me more attentive to her needs. For the longest I pray for her heart to be healed and for her fears be taken away. I think perhaps I needed to ask God to open my eyes & my heart so that I could see what He was accomplishing inside of me instead of trying to fix her. I think God was telling me she doesn’t need to be fix at all. It is you that needs fixing.

“Although the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of afflictions, your teachers will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them. Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” (Isaiah 30:20-2)

Your Puzzle God’s Plan

Good Morning my friends,

Almost a year ago we made a HUGE leap. It was the beginning of a new journey in our lives and in God’s vastness. Keri & I prayed about moving for months on end. We prayed for God to ease our fears and to remove the obstacles and lead us to the right place. Like pieces to a puzzle, God revealed each piece at the appropriate time, eased each fear when they arose and brought us comfort throughout the whole process.

“God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.” (1 Timothy 6:15-16)

We absolutely LOVE Stephenville.. There has been times when I wanted to go ballistic on my college neighbors but after a quick prayer God always reminded me that His Ways are not of this world. We starting looking for houses to lease in February. Every house we found there’s was always an obstacle but when knew that in the end God would find us the right place. Three weeks ago Keri came across a house that we thought was going to be perfect. While looking the realtor told us about a new construction that was being built but wasn’t going to be ready for a couple of weeks. We went home and looked at a few pictures online and I emailed him immediately and told him we wanted to look at it ASAP. He emailed me back and said he would meet us in 30 minutes. We knew as soon as we walked in that this was where God wanted us to be. It’s amazing how God works. There were obstacles with all the other homes because the home we were meant to have was being built. God planted us here I n Stephenville, now we’re ready to blossom in His Radiant Beauty.

“For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.” (Acts 17:28)

We are going to let God annoit us with His Presence because He is the King of kings and Lord of lords that dwells in an unapproachable Light. As we draw near to God, He will respond by drawing neigh to you.

“Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”(James 4:8)

When His Presence envelops you, you may feel overwhelmed by His Power and Glory. This is a form of worship: sensing your smallness in comparison to His Greatness. We have a tendency to make ourselves the measure of all things, but our measure is too tiny to comprehend God’s majestic vastness. That’s why a lot of people will never see God despite attempting to live, move and having their being in Him. Enjoy the radiant beauty of His Presence. Declare God’s glorious Grace to the world.

“Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty— and I will meditate on your wonderful works. They tell of the power of your awesome works— and I will proclaim your great deeds.” (Psalm 145:3-6)

I Need You to Listen Not to Fix It

It’s Friday but SUNDAY’S COMING!!!

Good Morning my friends,

I’m sure that most of you are aware that Keri works for me. There are many evenings that she comes to me and wants to talk about her day, her frustrations and things that occurred. You’re probably wondering why she would have to do such a thing since we’re in the same building but although I see her several times a day it’s only briefly intervals when I’m walk walking through the store checking on product or making sure everything is running smoothly. Most of the time I stay pretty busy in my office.. I don’t like to park myself in one spot to long because I’ve learned that people don’t like to be micro-managed or to be watched over in every move they make. I believe that micro managing is one of the most common & biggest mistakes a manager can make with employees. I’ve found that the majority of employees thrive when they are trusted with responsibility and are made to feel that they have a voice that matters. Employees are more willing to take ownership when the are made to feel important. This has played a huge factor in the success of my store. When I first became store manager, I tried to do everything myself because I lived by the motto, “If I want something done right, then I will do it myself.” I quickly became wore out from not only that but also the added stress I placed on myself to be “The Best.” I was constantly in fix-it mode.. It never ended. Even at home when Keri would start to tell me about her day, I would immediately start planning how I was going to fix her frustrations. I did this despite her not wanting me to fix anything. She was just needing to be heard and for me to just listen..

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42)

Being a Mr. Fix-it is one of the biggest problems that men face in their marriage and professionally but yet it’s one of the easiest to fix. How Ironic is that? Men are all about fixing everyone else’s problems but yet we refuse to fix one of our easiest. This seems to be a common theme in this country? We try to police the world but yet we run amuck in our own society.. We try to feed the world, yet we have people starving in our own society. We try to house the world, yet we have homeless in our own society. We try to fund the world, yet we have people living in poverty in our own society. These are problems we shouldn’t be trying to fix. God will bless the people that are in need when the time is right in His eyes, not ours. Perhaps people struggle in this country because they have yet to turn to God to be their answer.

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”(Psalm 32:8)

Problems are a part of life.. They are inescapable.. They are intertwined in the fabric of this fallen world. We have a tendency to jump readily into problem-solving mode as if we have the capacity to fix everything and have the answer to all of life’s problems. This is has become such a habitual response that it automatically bypasses our conscious thinking. This habit not only frustrates you but it also distances you from God. We make fixing things our top priority. We do not have the capacity to correct all that is wrong in society, so why should you weigh yourself down with responsibility. Instead, make your relationship with God your primary concern. Talk with Him about whatever is on your mind, seek His perspective on every situation and let Him give you direction rather than trying to fix everything that comes to your attention. Ask God to show you what is truly important. Remember that you’re enroute to heaven, so let your problems fade in the Light of eternity.

“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.” (Philippians 3:20-21)

Societies Thrills & Frills Just Steal

Good Morning my friends

God’s love is an everlasting Love. A love that flows from the depths of eternity. The Bible tells us that God knew us before we were born. How do you explain or understand a Love that is so deep that it encompasses you from before your birth to beyond the grave? I think our society has lost its perspective of eternity. We allow ourselves to get distracted from the gaping jaws of death and engage ourselves in ceaseless activities for our own amusement. We have lost the art of being still in God’s Presence because we want instant gratification. It is the stillness that enables us to experience God’s eternal Love. We need the certainty of God’s loving Presence in order to weather the storms of life. It’s during these times of severe testing that even the best theology can fail us if it isn’t accompanied with the knowledge of God. The ultimate protection against sinking during life’s storms is devoting time to develop your relationship with God.

“The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” (Jeremiah 31:3)

I can remember when Keri was pregnant with Zakk & Big Mick. I took the time to read to them almost every night. Keri & I would be laying on the bed and whatever book I was reading at the time, I would read to them as if they were laying right there with us. I read books like “The Book of Virtues” by Willam J Bennett, Oliver North’s “Under Fire”, Norman J Swarzkoff’s “It Doesn’t take a Hero” & Jimmy Johnson’s “Turning the Thing Around”. There were many more. I made sure that I talked to them every day. I would tell him how much I loved. I wanted them to know my voice once they were born.. To say that I was proud the day they were born is understatement. The love that I have for my boys within my heart goes beyond what any word that I could ever come up with to describe it. My love began way before Keri & I got married and has continued to grow stronger with each passing day. How could I love someone like that before I was even married? Let me explain. My love for my boys began on June 15th 1988.. That was the day my nephew Chris was born and the first time, I held him. At that moment I knew that some day I would have boys. Although Chris wasn’t mine, he has my blood running through his veins because of my sister. On that day, I assumed the role & duties of dad because I didn’t know if he would ever have the experience having a dad.. I fed him, changed his diapers, played with him. We did everything together we possibly could. I took him to the mall. I took him to McDonald’s. I bought him his first bike and taught him how to ride it. I played catch with him. I attended almost EVERY baseball game that he ever played in from T-ball thru high school. I have always treated him as if he was my son and still do to this day.
One of the things that I’ve tried to teach my boys is that in life, we often get caught up with the extra-curriculars both the good & bad. We often let the joys & thrill of the moment gather our attention. When we allow this to happen we lose focus on the fact that our eternal future is at stake. I tell them often that the choices that you make while you’re here on earth will have way more consequences in eternity than they will ever have while we are here. Eternity is forever. Our Father loves us way more than we deserve and could ever imagine and it is spelled out for us in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. “. The Bible says WHOSOEVER.. That means me & YOU… As I think about the love I have for my boys, it fails in comparison to the Love our Father has for his children. I can’t imagine letting one of my boys die for me, let alone some ungrateful person that lives in the moment.

“Because of the Lord ’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.” (Lamentations 3:22-26)

God’s Leash

Good Morning my friends,

So many times in my life I ask, “WHY ME”… The times when things didn’t or weren’t going my way.. The times when I saw others flourishing but yet I was left to ponder what I was doing wrong. I knew that I might not be the perfect husband, father, son, brother, employee or friend but why was this happening to me or why isn’t this happening for me?… I often said things like I don’t deserve this ….. I’m a better person than ….or…. they never seem to being going through crap like this… They’re on top of the world, why can’t…

Can you relate?

“He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.” (Isaiah 40:11)



Those thoughts surfaced throughout my adult life. Now when I look back on those times, I can see that it was during those difficult & trying times that I had moved further & further away from God. If you have kids, think about the times when you would take them outside to play or perhaps to a public park. You were constantly on alert watching and making sure they didn’t get to far away or out of your sight. If you were like Keri & I, you were ALWAYS saying, “come back over here”.
As an adult I’ve always been a lot like a kid.. God was always saying, “come back over here.” God knew that I was the type of person that would have the tendency to push the envelope as far as possible. He knew that I would have to be reeled back in constantly. God has always made sure that He kept me on one of those child leashes… I can hear Him now, “this one is stubborn, Jesus it’s your turn to reel him back in…the Holy Spirit is tired.” My mom will tell that when I was a little boy I would be within the grasp of her hand one second and vanish the next. I’ve heard my mom tell Keri & my boys on many occasions a particular story of when we were out shopping. I think it was me, my mom, my sister & my grandmother. They were looking at clothes… My mom had a hold of my hand like always and I managed to squirm out of her grasp and she told me to stay next to her. Of course being the little angel I was I said, ok.. She turned around for a split second to check on my sister and I vanished. The search was on.. She combed the entire store searching for me.. After searching everywhere she finally called out my name and I answered but she still could not see me. I stayed by her side in the original spot the whole time but she couldn’t see me because I had found a place to sit down in the middle of the round clothes rack or perhaps I was hiding… I honestly think I just found a place to sit but I’m pretty sure if my grandmother was still alive they would ALL say different…lol

Everyday my main priority is to let God infuse His peace within me. When I sit quietly in the Light of His Presence, I want to feel the sense of Peace growing within myself. This is not something that can be accomplished through self-discipline, will-power or a life coach. This is made possible only when we allow ourselves to receive God’s blessing.
We live in a society that promotes independence. People find it hard to admit that they can’t live life alone and that they are needy. Throughout my life, God has taken me along a path that has highlighted my need for Him. I’ve been placed in situations where my strengths were irrelevant and my weaknesses were glaring evident. It was through those arduous desert marches that I have drawn closer and closer to God. I discovered that there are flowers of Peace blooming in the most desolate places. I learned to thank God for the hard times and all of my difficult journeys. When we learn to do this, we are trusting God to accomplish His best work. Realizing that you need God is the key to knowing Him intimately, which is the ULTIMATE gift above all gifts.

I THANK God for my leash daily…

“The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.” (Isaiah 58:11)


My CHALLENGE prayer for you… Thank God for your leash.. I know sometimes there will be heartache & pain.. We must remember that we are here temporary but ETERNITY is forever..

Glory to God Forever

Good Morning my friends,

I woke up this morning singing Glory to God Forever.. As I grow closer to God in my walk and look at society, I can’t help but feel sorry for people because in reality they’re walking around aimlessly. Clueless as to what the world offers you. I was one of those people for 43 years. I didn’t know what it meant to follow God. I lived my whole adult life as a “believer” and nothing more. The thing about believing is that it lacks commitment. I believed but I wasn’t committed. The life I lived said something totally different than a believer. A lot of people would say that I was the ultimate hypocrite. I never considered myself a hypocrite because I didn’t condemned them for their sinful ways. I didn’t talk about the sin they were committing. Instead I lived the same sinful lifestyle. I made an appearance at church EVERY Sunday.. The people there thought I was a stand up guy and that’s what mattered to me. The moment I walked out the door I lived as if I wanted to be hell bound.
I’m determined to let thankfulness rule my heart. When we thank God for the blessings in our life, it allows marvelous things to happen. It’s as if scales are removed from our eyes which then enables us to see more and more of God’s glorious riches. Once the scales are removed and your eyes are opened, you can now help yourself to whatever you need from God’s treasure house.

“Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized.” (Acts 9:18)

Each time you recieve one of God’s golden gifts, let your thankfulness sing praises to His Holy Name. “Hallelujahs” are the language of heaven and they need to become the language of your heart. A life of praise and thankfulness becomes a life filled with miracles. Instead of trying to be in control of your life, keep yourself focused on God and what He is doing in your life. The power of praise keeps your attention centered on God. God created you to live like this because He made you in His own image. To enjoy an abundant life you must be overflowing with praise and thankfulness.

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” (Colossians 3:15)

As God reveals Himself to me more & more, I realize how much more I need to grow. With each layer of scales removed, comes another blessing of insight of His love & graciousness. My days have become continual shouts of praise and thanksgiving. Glory to God Forever for the many blessings that He pours on me daily. I thank God for those that are clueless because it gives me an opportunity to pray or perhaps shed God’s light on those that are bound by darkness and hell bound.
If you would’ve asked me where I was going to spend ETERNITY, I would’ve boldly declared Heaven.. I mean heck I was a believer.. I could even quote a little scripture. Truth be known…. Satan believes in God. In fact, satan knows God exist. Satan can even quote scripture, so does that mean satan will be in heaven too??

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.” (Psalm 100:4-5)
